Tourniquet Training

Our Mission

The Problem:

Why are we so passionate about our growing cause? We truly believe that our free training has the opportunity to raise awareness and even make a major difference in public health emergencies over time.

We believe the importance of early bleeding control is well established, both on a pathophysiological and epidemiological scale. In the United States, trauma has been shown to be the leading cause of death in those aged 1 to 44 years old, and is responsible for 30% of all life years lost. In a study in Houston, Texas, where we held our first pilot event, greater than 50% of deaths attributed to extremity trauma were deemed to have been amenable to tourniquet application.

Life-threatening limb injuries in both individual and mass-casualty settings are an increasing concern in the modern public sphere. Bystanders with basic knowledge of hemorrhage control can decrease the amount of blood loss a victim experiences before emergency services arrive.

Our Solution:

Lone Star Survival is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that teaches basic bleeding control methods via short, free, and interactive lessons in public, high-foot-traffic areas.

Our lessons are completely free with absolutely no cost to the participants or venues. Each lesson runs between 5 to 10 minutes and we are conveniently set up around malls, museums, football games, colleges, and many other popular venues. Our instructors are medical students, physicians, physician assistants, EMTs, and other healthcare professionals from all 12 medical schools in Texas.

In our lessons, we use our custom-designed bleeding limb simulators that are built in Houston, Texas, and shipped out to our many different locations.  These lifelike simulators “bleed” and require appropriate pressure and tourniquet application to stop the bleeding.

Our training is not meant to replace national campaigns like Stop the Bleed or Until Help Arrives. Instead, through much shorter, free lessons in public areas, we aim to target an untapped demographic and increase interest in these campaigns.
